Institute of Communication and Computer Systems- ICCS is an institute attached to the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), which is the oldest and most prestigious University in Greece. The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) is associated with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DECE) of NTUA. The institute carries research and development activities in the fields on all diverse aspects of telecommunications systems and techniques, media processing, multimedia technologies, multimedia communications, computer vision, adaptive learning, adaptive classifiers, video transmission, delivery, content-based retrieval algorithms, content management and content manipulation. Since 1989 ICCS has been extensively involved in the RACE, ESPRIT, BRITE, IST programs supported by the EC and it has acquired significant expertise in many research areas.

The telecommunication lab of the ICCS/NTUA has a great expertise in internetworking and media streaming by publishing more than 200 papers in the area of content-based retrieval, video summarization, relevance feedback, media search services, areas that are involved in this project. It has also participated in related EU funded and National projects, such as the EU funded project OLYMPIC (dealing with dealing personalized, adaptable audiovisual delivery of the Olympic Games), POLYMNIA (dealing with automatic content interpretation, delivery and access for entertainment), DELOS, MCDN, and the national projects PIDALION (the only Greek funded on-going project dealing with static content-based image retrieval) and PYTHOGORAS for multimedia content-based search services.. It was also the co-ordinator of MARIDES, MONASIRE, CELLO, and CAUTION++ EU funded projects.

Relevant research activities of the Telecommunications Laboratory of ICCS.

The main expertise of ICCS as regards research is multidimensional. As regards issues related to access to wired and wireless heterogeneous networks, the participation in EU OLYMPIC and My-eDirector 2012 projects, in which ICCS has acted also as technical coordinator. Furthermore, the participation in OLYMPIC and ISMuS projects has created the expertise in real time media streaming over internet networks, related transport protocols and application development both at server and terminal level. As regards personalization issues, both the participation in My-eDirector2012 and MAGNET/MAGNET beyond projects has provided the expertise to address personalization and user profile issues, while in PILAION, ICCS has developed MPEG-7,21 technologies for context description and service personalization. As regards multimedia annotation and indexing/searching, ICCS was coordinator of PIDALION project, the first Greek multimedia search engine. Finally, ICCS was coordinator of the POLYMNIA project in which it has developed user relevance feedback algorithms and content based sampling schemes for content adaptation in regards to user, network properties.
